Inside the Waymo Driver: Multi-Sensor Fusion at Scale

How Waymo combines custom roof-mounted LiDAR dome arrays, imaging radar, and AI trajectory prediction to operate driverless commercial robotaxis.

The 5th Generation Autonomous Platform

Waymo’s autonomous technology stack is widely regarded as one of the most mature Level 4 commercial driverless implementations globally. Operating across Phoenix, San Francisco, and Los Angeles, the system relies on a tightly integrated hardware-software architecture.

LiDAR, Radar, and Optical Synergy

Unlike vision-only paradigms, Waymo utilizes custom-built 360-degree LiDAR sensors capable of identifying objects over 500 meters away in complete darkness. The point clouds generated by these lasers are combined with high-dynamic-range cameras and radar to build a dense, real-time 3D semantic map of the surroundings.
